This is NOT what I meant when I said I’d live my chicken life through you. Cannibalistic mother chicken never ever crossed my mind!
That’s just gross…and yet mildly humorous at the same time.

Sometimes guinea pigs would eat their babies if they deemed them not well. Not quite sure what is up with that. I think your chicken is onto something though. Maybe she ate the eggs that weren’t healthy or ready to be chickens. Natural selection.
Okay, how did you discover this? I want more details! This is really disturbing. Maybe she has some sort of mineral deficiency and is eating the eggshells? And that’s why you didn’t find any but you smelled the innards rotting?
Alright, I am googling this because I’m so curious. The first thing I’ve found said that she could be dehydrated and eating the eggs for the liquid content. Actually, there are a TON of sites out there about raising chickens, why am I surprised?
Yeah, I have read a bunch on this the last week. I think the issue is not mineral deprivation, but rather that we had an immature chicken (Hildy) who was dropping some malformed eggs (they had thin shells). Those eggs broke open, other chickens tasted them, decided it was delicious and now we have egg eaters on our hands. We are going to blow out some eggs and fill them full of that red rooster hot sauce from VietNam and see how they like that. I hear this should cure them. Otherwise, we might have to consider Craigslisting them…. I don’t know.

I can see your heading now….. “Cannibalistic chickens free to a good home”….. that should bring out the crazies.
There are some ethical dilemmas to Craigslisting egg-eating chickens. I’m going to try the hot sauce, wooden/stone eggs in the nest and some isolation tactics. We’ll see how this goes.

Wow, chicken rearing poses many more ethical issues that I’d ever imagined!

But, they are not really her eggs. Maybe she’s super smart and has realised that they’re from another hen.

Stew that chicken! Set an example for the other chickens!

This is bad. A cannibal chicken. I’m grossed out a bit.
