See? I CAN change!

All my childhood my mom tried to encourage us to make our beds.  Every morning.  This seemed extravagantly meaningless to me.  After all, why make a bed that would just be torn apart come bedtime?  What was the point?

Suddenly this year I found myself making my bed in the morning, standing back to admire my handiwork, taking joy in the orderliness of one room in the midst of CHAOS.  I liked making my bed.  I enjoyed climbing into it in the evening, nice and neat, sheets tucked properly and blankets lying even across the top.  Order.  Sigh.  I love it.

So at 37, I now make my bed.  Change is possible.  There is hope for me yet.

If you look really closely at the picture you can see the Virgin Mary (and her dog) floating in spots of light slightly above my side of the bed.

I like a made bed, too, Ingrid, but Johnny and I solved the problem years ago: we put half of a double sleeping bag under our mattress, zipping up the top half over the mattress and over our sheets. The bedspread goes on top of the sleeping bag. So, in the morning, we just pull the sheet/sleepingbag/bedspread up and presto! the bed is made. That also keeps Johnny from pulling all the covers to his side of the bed, which he does if the bags come unzipped.

  2. I make my bed every day, too. And if Jason sleeps later than I do I make it when he gets up. Like you said–order in the chaos. :)

I too, was not much of a bed maker when I was younger. Now, I try to do it everyday. It makes me feel successful in my day… that I finished at least
    SOMETHING.

I think that is the Virgin Mary smiling becuase you make your bed and alleviate all Catholic guilt in one swoop. The dog…I don’t know…

I love our fluffy down comforters. The top one is encased in a duvet so it even looks pretty. All the lumps and bumps are an acceptable part of the total picture and if I ever don’t get the bed pulled together and plumped you can be sure that it happens before I go to bed in the evening.
